Callout to Demonstrate against 2014 DPRTE Arms Fair.

8.30 am at Cardiff Motorpoint Arena. Wednesday, the 8th of October

“When the rich wage war, it’s the poor who die.” – Jean-Paul Sartre

def proc

On the 8th of October Cardiff will host one of the UK’s biggest arms fairs at the Motorpoint Arena. Let’s show them what we think of their dirty business! We call on people from south Wales and beyond to come and picket outside the arena that day from the time they open for registration at 8.30 am.

DPRTE this year will be attended by some of the UK’s biggest arms companies, as their exhibitor list shows. They also host a conference, with keynote speakers from industry and government.

The arms fair was previously held in Bristol, but was forced out by protests.

We hope to see you there. If you would like to be a legal observer contact us at stopnatocymru@riseup.net . You can also contact us by that email address for any additional information regarding the demonstration

Stop NATO Sabcat action against austerity

Report taken from Indymedia.

cat litter and debris at the jobcentre

cat litter and debris at the jobcentre

A small but lively crowd made its way through the streets of Newport, complete with soundsystem, sab-cat masks, and the ever-present PLOs.

Leaflets were given out en-route to onlookers (some bemused, some interested, many both!) and the megaphone was used to explain the links between NATO, the cuts, inequality and the whole rotten system.

When we reached the jobcentre the door was already guarded.

The atmosphere was boosted as a heap of ripped up NATO propaganda appeared in the doorway, as did a large quantity of dry cat litter! Just the thing for a system that stinks..

At this point the police tried to make an arrest, eventually succeeding.

We continued on to the army recruitment office, which has a jobcentre next door, where chants included ‘our kids are not cannon fodder, their kids are not collateral damage’. Again it was protected by police.

At this point rumours of a member of the public being accidentally injured during the events were going around. Many of us were quite shocked by this news and the demo was cut short – no doubt many other interesting places could have been next if we’d chosen to continue, but it did not seem appropriate.

Thankfully it emerged later that the injury was in fact a minor one that did not require hospital treatment, to everyone’s relief.

Overall, a small but important part of the week of action. For more on the links between NATO and austerity see:

CALLOUT – Sunday 31st August – Stop NATO action against securitisation and policing

In preparation for the NATO summit, the authorities have put a giant fucking wall around parts of Cardiff and Newport. Local people do not want this wall – it prevents access to public grounds and services, disrupts essential travel and is an ugly visible reminder of the increasingly militarised zone that Cardiff and Newport have become in advance of this Summit.

Whilst they are in no way equivalent, we are mindful of the daily plight of the Palestinian people, hemmed in by giant walls that prevent them from accessing sufficient provisions, medical care or shelter from the prolific murderous Israeli attacks that have recently claimed thousands of lives. We stand against all those states and corporations which would seek to profit from human misery, division and securitisation.

Meet us at 3pm on Sunday 31st August at the security gates nearest to the Nye Bevan statue in Cardiff (west end of Queen Street, opposite the Castle) to make our feelings known.

Bring Palestinian flags and banners.

‘No it doesn’t’. A reply to Paul Flynn MP.

Recently, the organisers of the NATO Counter Summit – opposed to this September’s NATO Summit in Newport – disinvited Paul Flynn MP after realising what his actual position on the existence of NATO is. Mr Flynn immediately took to his blog, riling against the ‘Marxists’ and ‘anarchists’ who put principles above publicity in a post titled ‘Does ‘No to NATO’ mean ‘Yes to Putin’?’. Below is a response to Mr Flynn, written by a supporter of Stop NATO Cymru, the posturing anarchists who have been organising against the Summit.

That’s not happened before. A group of campaigners, organising against a huge international institution, in need of as much publicity as they can get, turning away a mildly well-known politician who was very keen to speak at their event. Why on earth would they do this? Isn’t being this intolerant bad for the ‘peace movement’ our politician suggests he supports? And just think of the bad publicity!

Thing is, the event is an explicitly anti-NATO event. NATO is the institution that’s been doing an awful lot of posturing recently, presenting itself as the opposite of Putin’s Russia and the separatist rebels who kill civilians (with weapons produced in NATO member countries, incidentally), defender of the poor souls in places like Crimea – who didn’t know any better than voting to re-amalgamate with Russia – and the civilians of Afghanistan, 20,000 of whom were bravely sacrificed to bring the glory of Representative Democracy to the region.

Now, in fairness, our politician did voice his opposition to the blood-letting exercises that were the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, but people change as they age, and by now he seems intent on stoking the flames of conflict in Ukraine, demanding that NATO “act strongly” with all its nuclear might against Putin and put the Soviets back in their place, full-on Cold War American Hawk style. Not quite the type to speak at an anti-NATO Counter Summit, I would’ve thought. So why’s he so peeved at not getting to speak? Maybe because our politician likes to be seen as bit of an outsider, a rebel on the back-benches, against the system whilst sitting comfortably in its lap.

But then again he doesn’t mind that much (despite having cared enough to blog about it). After all, as he reminds us, he doesn’t need our platform, he already has the best in the country – those comfy looking green benches – from which he is occasionally allowed to stand, ask a question, make a comment and get his five minutes on BBC Parliament. Yes, he may not be a policy-maker, a cabinet member or even a shadow cabinet member (despite having sat in the Commons since 1987…) but he can certainly make his voice heard, if not make any impact on actual policy. In fact, his voice was once heard so clearly, that he was suspended from the debating club for five days! While our politician was wringing his hands at the thought of getting to speak even more at the NATO Counter Summit, the anarchists he dislikes so much have been out on the streets, raising awareness of what NATO is, galvanising people to oppose imperialistic wars and organising to make our voice – the voice of the plebian non-MPs – heard this September.

The accusation that we are pro-Putin is stupidly ignorant at best and deeply offensive at worst. Putin is an oppressive, violent dictator who is guilty of war crimes; does that mean that we should be pro-Obama instead? Should we favour American expansionism over Russian expansionism? Be under no illusions that the US state acts on nothing more than self-interest when it uses its armed NATO puppet to expand its turf. When the Soviet-bloc fell and the Cold War ended NATO’s purpose became exclusively focused on expansion. In Libya, for example, when it saw its chance to take more of the Middle East, it continued to send military aid to the Egyptian dictatorship whist bombing the Libyan people for their own liberation. Stop NATO Cymru is an anti-imperialist movement, against all sates which stifle the self-determination of individuals and communities.

When our politician is celebrating Obama coming to Newport this September, we will be doing just what he claims to have been doing for years – opposing unnecessary wars. Events like the Counter Summit and the Week of Action exist to demonstrate what a world without warmongering, imperialism and apology for blood-thirsty regimes might look like. Paul Flynn has made it clear that he wants no part in that world.

Stop NATO Cymru Day of Action against Militarism

On the morning of Friday, July 25th, supporters of Stop NATO Cymru took action in London and Cardiff, locking themselves to the front doors of missile developer MBDA, occupying the HQ of arms company Airbus Group and closing the Armed Forces Careers Centre in Cardiff by occupying the roof. This was part of an ongoing anti-militarist campaign in the run up to September’s NATO Summit in Newport, targeting all institutions which perpetuate violence on a global scale.

MBDA is jointly owned by arms companies Airbus Group (37.5%), BAE Systems (37.5%) and Finmecanica (25%), companies guilty of providing arms used by Israel to bombard communities, demolish hospitals and murder innocent children in schools. Palestinian solidarity activists stood with us against these monsters, with Israel having used British bombs on playing children, family homes, schools, independent journalists, rescue vehicles and hospitals in the last week alone.

In solidarity with Stop NATO Cymru, anti-miltarist activists from Stop the Arms Fair entered the lobby and picketed the entrance to the London HQ of Airbus Group (aka EADS). Airbus Group is a major profiteer of war. They manufacture jets, drones (including some with nuclear warheads) and surveillance technology. They are the second largest arms producer in Europe, with investments in authoritarian regimes such as Saudi Arabia, UAE and Kazakhstan. Airbus has recently announced new contracts worth £50mil, and have urged the arms industry to take ‘full economic advantage’ of the NATO Summit. The summit is an opportunity for them to showcase their killing machines and  blood-stained business through NATO procurement. Stop NATO Cymru opposes the NATO war machine, arms production and the murder of anyone for corporate profit.

When the rich declare war, the poor die.

When the rich declare war, the poor die.

Earlier this month the British Army launched a recruitment drive entitled ‘More Than Meets the Eye’, aiming to dispel myths surrounding life in the forces, boost their falling recruitment figures and secure the flow of “a new stream of young blood” as head of recruiting, Major General  Chris Tickell, so aptly put it.

They are right about one thing, there is more to life in the army than meets our eyes – more to what the media, charities and the state show of the idealised soldier. Waves of forced redundancies are leaving thousands unemployed, many of them young people, promised adventure and reward at the recruiting office before being spat into the jobcentre, often injured, with thousands wounded over the last decade.

Even those who keep their job are constantly exploited y the state. The fact is that every individual within the armed forces – from the musician to the infantryman – is part of an effort to further the state’s  expansionist agenda. In Afghanistan, war for oil saw the deaths of almost 4,000 coalition troops and an estimated 20,000 Afghan civilians killed to bring NATO’s version of democracy to the Afghan people. Now we see conflict flaring in Ukraine, with British companies having armed the Russian dictatorship, America throwing its weight behind a neo-Nazi backed government and the  people of Ukraine and the world suffering the consequences.

We took action to show that we will not stand by and watch ordinary people suffer in the wars of the wealthy. We are anti-militarist, opposed to states, their armies and the world that creates them. When NATO brings its circus to Newport in September, we will make our feelings known.

NATO is the militarist juggernaut that encourages military spending in times of austerity, stokes the flames of conflict in places like Ukraine and represents the armed wing of capitalist exploitation. In spite of the power behind NATO – and all militarist institutions in a world of government by violence – we will keep up our fight on the streets, doing all that we can to bring change, until every gun is cold, every bomb is dead and every cage is empty.
